Reception: September 1, 2005
6:00pm to 9:00pm at Studio 107

"Oh Brother", by artist Matthew Bourbon
My art is concerned with the nuance of human behavior--what people do to other people, or what people fail to do. I work with fragments of found images, culled from a wide range of source material. Photographs, movies, television, book illustrations, magazine advertising and comics all serve as the foundation for my art. Essentially, I am thinking about my source material through the act of painting. I collect, filter and reconstruct the film still or the magazine advertisement as a way of embodying a personal meaning. In this sense my art is about an intimate process of identification with things familiar and things alien. In short, I am interested in creating paintings that are open to multiple interpretive possibilities. I am not attempting to articulate one specific story. Instead, I envision my art as a series of visual dramas unconstrained by the usual linear strategies of narrative painting. I want a slow art that rewards repeated looking.
