My works transform images and objects captured from digital media, architecture or cultural phenomenon into different contexts through re-making? I am interested in expanding the limits of a particular media through changing the format of the information contained within. In my digital prints, I emphasize pixels by extremely lowering the image resolution and transporting these processed images into an actual space either as installations or as 3D objects. Pixels are effective connectors between virtual and actual space because of their literal and low-tech nature. Similarly, highway road maps can be reinterpreted and transformed as 3D human body structures or a tangled web of Asian noodles. Image, media, tactile experiences and actual space engage one another even if at first glance they are totally separated. They engage through the application of metaphors with similar images or information in different forms. When modified into a different space, dimension, scale, and media, they provide a moment of clarity about their original medias and references. Specific meaning in each work emerges through the detailed process of manipulation and can be associated with cultural, social issues as well as with my own identity. Young-Min Kang |
